Journaling: prompts & tips to stay consistent

Whether you are an avid journal-er or you are looking to create a journaling routine, you are in the right place!

When it comes to journaling, the most common hesitation I hear is along the lines of, “but how do I stay consistent?” Consistency with anything can be tricky at first. We all have a billion things going on and it can seem impossible to fit one more thing in to the day. Challenge yourself to make the time for yourself and open your heart and mind to something new.

Taking care of yourself mentally, physically and emotionally is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. At times, it can be difficult to navigate our feelings if we don’t have some type of outlet. Journaling can become an amazing outlet and safe space if you allow yourself to be vulnerable.

Here are some tips and prompts to help you get started, happy journaling!

Tips:

  • Don’t overthink it, just start writing!

  • Be honest with yourself - sometimes our most vulnerable thoughts and feelings are hard to put down on paper, but I promise once you write it down you are one step closer to being able to letting that sh*t go!

  • Challenge your routine, if you normally wake up and scroll social media, change your habit. Keep your journal next to your bed so that way you can roll over and reach for that instead of your phone

  • Journaling doesn’t have to be so serious! Don’t feel like you need to pour your heart out every single time you put pen to paper. Make it fun and light

  • Write about anything and everything. No matter how big or small, journaling about life events allows us the opportunity to look back and connect with how we felt during that time

  • Journal while you enjoy your morning matcha / coffee / tea

  • Journal before you go to bed to wind down from the day

  • Take notice how you feel when journaling, connect with yourself and find peace during this time

Prompts & Inspiration:

  • What are you grateful for?

  • Manifestations

  • How did I show up for myself this today / this week / this month?

  • What are 3 things you are proud of that you have accomplished or obtained?

  • What are your goals for this year?

  • Reflect on the world around you. Write down 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste

  • Favorite childhood memory / favorite life experiences

  • What are you looking forward too this week? This month? This year?

  • Seasonal bucket list!

  • Take inspiration from a daily meditation book or other reading of choice

  • Use Pinterest to search for affirmations or quotes to use as inspiration and guidance. I love doing this when I am trying to ease back into journaling from a hiatus or need to have a light-heart prompt

Lastly, take prompt inspiration from your everyday life, find what works for you. Journaling is not a linear journey. I believe that journaling will find you when you need it. Don’t force anything, just be and allow yourself to grow.
